L’Oréal-UNESCO International Awards For Women in Science – Laureates

Created in 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards identify and support eminent women in science throughout the world. Each year, five Awards Laureates are recognized for their contributions to the advancement of science, in Life Sciences or Physical Sciences in alternating years.

In 2019, the Awards were designated for five outstanding researchers in the Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, each working in one of the following regions: Africa and the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America & North America. In 2020, the Awards will focus on Life Sciences.

Each of the Award Laureates will receive €100,000.

John C. Polanyi Award – NSERC

The NSERC John C. Polanyi Award was created to recognize and support a university researcher or team of researchers whose work has led to a recent outstanding Canadian advance in a field of the natural sciences or engineering.

Candidates can be at any stage in their career. At least one of the candidates must hold an NSERC research grant. Also, the research that led to the advance described in the nomination must have been supported by NSERC. NSERC reserves the right to rule on the eligibility of nominations and nominees.

In the case of a team nomination, members may be from academia, government or industry, and may be research associates, postdoctoral fellows or students. The team can be part of an international effort, but the majority of the nominated team members must be employed at a Canadian university or public or private organization. NSERC recognizes that teams may change between the time of the specific research achievements and the time of nomination. Nominations will be accepted when changes have occurred, but only where the core of the team remains intact.

An individual or team may be nominated for the NSERC John C. Polanyi Award and other major NSERC prizes in the same year, but can receive only one such prize in a given year.

Herzberg Medal – NSERC

The NSERC Herzberg Medal will be awarded for both the sustained excellence and overall influence of a body of work conducted in Canada in the natural sciences or engineering.

The nominee must be a scientist or engineer employed at a Canadian university, Canadian federal or provincial government lab or private firm active in Canada whose research is primarily based in the fields of the natural sciences and/or engineering. NSERC reserves the right to rule on the eligibility of nominees.

The nominee’s work must demonstrate a high degree of expertise, creativity, imagination, leadership, perseverance and dedication. The nominations will be reviewed on the basis of contributions to the areas of the natural sciences or engineering served by NSERC.

An individual may win the NSERC Herzberg Medal only once. An individual may be nominated for the NSERC Herzberg Medal and other major NSERC prizes in the same year, but can receive only one such prize in a given year.

Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology

The Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology is a prize awarded annually to recognize an exceptional scientific career or discovery in the field of ecology or other environmental science.

The award was created to honor the life and work of Dr. Ramon Margalef (1919-2004), one of the founding fathers of modern ecology and one of the most distinguished Spanish scientists of the twentieth century. The award has been presented every year since 2004 and comes with an honorarium of € 80,000 and a sculpture representing a microalga, called Picarola margalefii. It is open to ecologists from anywhere in the world. The award is given by the Generalitat de Catalunya in commemoration of Ramon Margalef.
