Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award (CUFA BC)

Named in memory of Dr. Paz Buttedahl – academic, community builder and faculty association leader – this award is for sustained outstanding contributions to the community beyond the academy through research or other scholarly activities by an individual or a group over the major portion of their career.

All forms of research and scholarly activity that contribute to the community beyond the academy are eligible for consideration. Examples of eligible contributions include:

  • developing an innovative idea, process or framework;
  • extending an idea, process or framework through novel applications;
  • promoting a field of knowledge to the public;
  • contributing to the understanding of public policy;
  • developing innovative systems to access research materials, etc.

Nomination package
Nominations for each of the awards must include the following information:

  • a completed Distinguished Academics Award nomination form available from the CUFA BC website;
  • an abbreviated curriculum vitae of the nominee(s). CVs may be no more than 20 pages (single-sided) or 10 pages (double-sided); and
  • two letters of reference, one of which must be from a person outside the university community who can comment on the contribution of the individual’s or group’s academic work to the community beyond the academy. These letters must specifically describe how the nominee(s) research or other scholarly activity has contributed to the community beyond the academy.
  • a letter of nomination specifically describing how the nominee(s) research or other scholarly activity has contributed to the community beyond the academy. In the case of the Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award, the letter must refer to contributions over the course of the career.

Early in Career Award (CUFA BC)

The Early in Career Award recognizes outstanding contributions made by scholars at relatively early stages in their careers. It is recognized that career patterns differ and so we encourage nominators to explain how this award is appropriate for their nominee. As a guide only, early in career is often defined as being “no more than five years from completion of a doctoral degree or equivalent” or “within three years of the initial appointment as an Assistant Professor”. The adjudication committee will determine the appropriateness of nominations.

Ehor Boyanowsky Academic of the Year Award (CUFA BC)

This award recognizes a specific and recent outstanding contribution to the community through research or other scholarly activity by an individual or group at any stage of their career. To be considered for an award, nominees must be current members of a CUFA BC member faculty association (Royal Roads, SFU, UBC, UNBC, and UVic). For a group nomination, a majority of group members, including the primary researcher or leader, if there is one, must be current members of a CUFA BC member faculty association. An award recipient must be willing and able to attend the awards dinner and to make a brief presentation of their work. Travel expenses for award recipients will be paid by CUFA BC.

Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists (Science/AAAS)

The Prize is awarded annually to one young scientist for outstanding life science research for which he/she was awarded a doctoral degree in the previous two years. The topic of the entrant’s thesis research must be in one of the following categories: Cell and Molecular Biology, Genomics and Proteomics, Ecology and Environment, Translational Medicine.

The winners from each category will compete for the grand prize.

Prize money: US$30,000 for the grand prize winner, US$10,000 for each of the category winners.

Publication: The grand prize winning essay will be published in Science and essays from the each of the category winners will be published onlin

Nomination Package

  • A completed Entry Form.
  • An essay, written by the entrant, describing the thesis work and its implications for research in the selected Subject Track. The essay must not exceed 1,000 words in length and may include one figure or table.
  • A one-page reference letter from your advisor or a member of your thesis committee. The letter should include an assessment of the applicant and comment on the significance of the applicant’s research.
    • The abstract of the thesis (not to exceed four double-spaced typed pages).
    • A list of the following:
    • Full citations of all published or in press papers on the research described in the essay;
    • Academic and professional awards and honors that the entrant has received; and
    • Relevant professional experience.
