Congratulations to MSc candidate Samantha James who won ‘Best 3 Minute Talk’ at 2018’s Pacific Ecology and Evolution Conference (PEEC).

PEEC is an annual event organized by graduate students for graduate students, and is held at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Organization of the event is shared by UBC, UVic, and SFU, and this, the 39th year’s conference, was organized by UBC students, most of whom are members the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF).The conference was a great success, with 92 students from 7 academic institutions from western Canada, and one student all the way from Université Laval.

Seven IOF students (Nathan Bendriem, Tim Cashion, Amelia Hesketh, Samantha James, Ravi Maharaj, Emilie Stump, and Travis Tai) presented on their graduate research, either by a poster presentation, a 3 minute or a 12 minute presentation, with prizes given for the best in each category.

Samantha’s talk was entitled: “Characterizing the diets of juvenile Fraser River sockeye salmon across ocean regimes in coastal British Columbia”.
