Our warmest congratulations to Dr. Andrea Reid from the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries, who has received the SCAS Outstanding Service Award. The award recognizes exceptional initiative on behalf of the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences, acknowledging Dr. Reid’s innovative efforts in developing inclusive spaces for Indigenous content and participation. This award is shared with Dr. Catherine Febria who leads the Healthy Headwaters Lab at the University of Windsor.
In the words of Dr. Reid, “Working alongside the Healthy Headwaters Lab, we in the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries regularly invest many hearts and minds into positively transforming conference spaces and experiences. We are collectively grateful to SCAS for being a willing and open community to engage with. We are especially grateful to our friends and hosts from Kahnawá:ke when we visited Tiohtià:ke/Montreal for this coming together in 2023.”
Dr. Reid is a member of the Nisg̱a’a Nation, an assistant professor in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and the founder and leader of the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries, which aims to foster inclusive environments for the study and protection of culturally significant fish and fisheries. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary and community-based approaches, utilizing applied science to improve our current knowledge of the intricate bonds between Indigenous communities and sustainable fisheries. Her methods focus on integrating Western and Indigenous scientific approaches and methodologies for the betterment of all.
She is also a National Geographic Explorer, a Fellow of The Explorers Club, and a co-founder of Riparia, a Canadian charity that provides young women with learning opportunities in science to encourage a new generation of protectors for freshwaters and the outdoors.
