Advancing Research

The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries’s research addresses the most pressing oceans and fisheries-related issues.

  • Marine Mammal Research Unit (MMRU)

    Marine Mammal Research Unit (MMRU)

Help researchers learn more about sea lions and the oceans we share with them. Sea lion populations have been declining during the past three decades. Nearly 80% of the world’s Steller sea lions have disappeared. Your support will help MMRU learn more about sea lions and other marine mammals, including northern fur seals.

  • Project Seahorse

    Project Seahorse

Project Seahorse depends on the support of our partners and dedicated individuals to carry out its vital work. We work simultaneously with seahorses and with the broad issues that affect their conservation, constantly marrying research and action into effective change. With your help, we’ll make a difference for seahorses and marine conservation everywhere.

  • Sea Around Us

    Sea Around Us

With your help, the Sea Around Us initiative will continue to provide unique, global databases of marine and freshwater fisheries catches and related indicators crucial to back marine conservation efforts. Your contribution will allow us to: Estimate the nutrient content of the catch to support nutritional security efforts; estimate the nutrient content of farmed species; reconstruct freshwater fisheries catches of every country in the world; expand CMSY stocks assessments; and, understand the ownership of distant-water fleets.

  • Africa-UBC Oceans & Fisheries Visiting Fellows Program

Africa-UBC Oceans & Fisheries Visiting Fellows Program

This program will allow talented early-career academics from sub-Saharan African universities and research institutes to engage with leading researchers at the University of British Columbia, to facilitate diverse, equitable, mutually beneficial research collaborations.
