Vancouver Summer Program Instructor Assistant

Duration: June 9 – July 3, 2025 and/or July 14 – August 8, 2025

Overview:

The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is offering a four-week, condensed course series for international undergraduate students through the Vancouver Summer Program (VSP). We are seeking Instructor Assistants to support the delivery of an engaging, hands-on learning experience centred on ocean sustainability, leadership, and applied marine issues.

Instructor Assistants will help facilitate the Becoming a Leader for the Oceans and Our Planet and Grand Challenges Facing the Ocean courses by providing instructional and logistical support. The role offers valuable teaching experience, including leading select sessions, facilitating group discussions, and supporting experiential learning activities. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students in marine science who are looking to strengthen their teaching skills while engaging with international students in a dynamic educational setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide general support to instructors in the coordination and delivery of course content and activities.
  • Contribute to teaching by leading select sessions, facilitating group discussions, and supporting experiential learning activities.
  • Assist with classroom, field, and experiential learning logistics.
  • Support student learning by helping with group activities, answering questions, and fostering participation.
  • Contribute to program planning and coordination, including scheduling and communications.
  • Help prepare teaching materials and assist with assignments, attendance, and evaluations.
  • Support the setup and facilitation of guest lectures and student events.
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to ensure a smooth and enriching experience for all participants.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in progress or completed in a relevant field (e.g., marine science, environmental studies, education).
  • Experience working in educational or cross-cultural settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in dynamic, team-based environments.
  • Prior involvement with UBC or international programs is an asset.
