IOF Mini School Instructor (Marine Science)

Overview:

The UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) is seeking an instructor for the Dive into Marine Science Mini School, a specialized program within the UBC Future Global Leaders (FGL) initiative. This intensive 45-hour course is designed for high school students (ages 15–18) who are interested in exploring marine science through hands-on learning and team-based research. We intend to give those students a glimpse of what it means to study at the university, and also offer an opportunity for career exploration. The program introduces students to fundamental marine research principles, data analysis tools, and ocean sustainability challenges.

The instructor will guide students in understanding how experts study marine ecosystems, use innovative technologies like drones and data platforms, and apply scientific findings to real-world marine conservation and policy-making.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Dive into Marine Science Mini School, delivering engaging lessons, discussions, and experiential activities.
  • Collaborate with IOF staff to develop an innovative and outgoing curriculum that introduces students to marine science, including data science applications, field observations, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Foster teamwork, critical thinking, and science communication skills among FGL students.
  • Incorporate hands-on activities such as case studies, policy discussions, and research simulations.
  • Provide mentorship and insights into marine science careers and academic pathways.
  • Evaluate student engagement and provide constructive feedback on their progress.
  • Contribute to program development, ensuring a dynamic and inspiring learning experience.
Qualifications:
  • A complete or ongoing Master’s or PhD in Marine Science, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in marine research, data science applications in ocean studies, or marine policy development.
  • Previous teaching or mentorship experience is required. Experience in high school or early undergraduate students is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging.
  • Experience with experiential learning framework is an asset.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
