Overview:
The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) at UBC offers a four-week condensed academic series for international undergraduate students through the Vancouver Summer Program (VSP). We are seeking Primary Instructors to lead and deliver the newly structured Ocean Leaders: An Environmental Leadership Program. This program includes two interconnected courses: Becoming a Leader for the Oceans and our Planet, and Grand Challenges Facing the Ocean. Instructors will provide academic leadership, facilitate experiential and project-based learning, and lead a small instructional team that includes an Instructor Assistant and an Educational Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced educators to deliver transformative education in ocean sustainability and environmental leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the academic delivery of two interconnected courses, ensuring alignment with program goals.
- Design and facilitate lectures, workshops, and experiential activities that engage diverse student backgrounds.
- Oversee curriculum content related to ocean leadership, sustainability, communication, and policy.
- Coordinate a team-based teaching environment, including the supervision of an Instructor Assistant.
- Develop assessments and provide feedback in collaboration with teaching support staff.
- Liaise with IOF and VSP staff to support program planning, cultural engagement, and student experience.
- Contribute to program reflection and evaluation to inform future iterations.
Qualifications:
- MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., marine science, sustainability, environmental policy, science communication).
- Experience in university-level teaching, including curriculum development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Proven skills in science communication, policy analysis, and experiential or project-based learning.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor instructional teams.
- Strong organizational and intercultural communication skills.
- Familiarity with international student programming or short-term academic initiatives is an asset.
