Sea Around Us

Biography

Roshni was born in Mauritius and grew up between Mauritius and India. She is a Researcher at the Sea Around Us, where she focuses on fisheries catch reconstruction in the Western Indian Ocean. Her work covers Mauritius (including the Chagos Archipelago), Madagascar, Comoros, Réunion, and Mayotte.

Before joining Sea Around Us in 2025, Roshni worked with Project Seahorse, where she studied the bottom trawling industry in Asia—specifically in India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Her research explored the human dimensions of fishing, including the motivations behind starting, staying in, and leaving bottom trawling.

Roshni holds an MSc in Oceans and Fisheries from the University of British Columbia, where she conducted her graduate research with Project Seahorse, and a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in Maine, USA. Her experience spans diverse areas such as marine mammals, oceanography, fisheries, marine ecology, marine social science, coral reef restoration, and marine education. She has worked on research related to Mauritius, Chagos, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Réunion, Seychelles, the USA, New Zealand, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Roshni strongly believes in giving back to the community and that education is more than academics. She is passionate about human rights issues and social justice. She aims to promote change not only through her research, but also through her everyday actions.
