Biography

Julia has a strong interest in climate science and coastal ecosystems. Her research aims to improve public understanding of climate change’s impact on coastal ecosystems and dependent communities. She supplements her theoretical knowledge with practical experiences gained at several research institutions around the world, such as the Bermuda Institute for Ocean Sciences. Her pedagogical skills and volunteer work have shaped her ability to communicate with scientific and non-scientific communities.

Julia’s PhD project — a collaboration between UBC’s Changing Oceans Research Unit, UVic’s Spectral Remote Sensing Laboratory, and Ocean Wise — investigates the potential for kelp seaforestation in British Columbia under climate change. This includes assessing the vulnerability of British Columbia’s kelp habitat to climatic hazards and predicting where kelp could thrive in the future under various climate conditions along the coastline. Julia employs predictive models and scenarios for her investigations to enhance the public understanding of how restoring kelp can address critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and food security.

In her free time, Julia enjoys exploring British Columbia’s unique landscape. She thrives in outdoor activities, whether in the water, on the water, or by the water. When she needs some alone time, Julia heads to the mountains to go climbing or backpacking.
