Biography
Zeyu has a background in environmental science, environmental economics and fishery resource ecology. Her Masters’s research focused on the treatment of heavy metal pollution, and her Ph.D. research on the effects of climate change on fisheries, ecosystems, economy and the accumulation of pollution in the food web. During her doctoral study time, she studied at UBC as a visiting international student. She received her Ph.D. degree in Environmental Science at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), Guangzhou, China, with a thesis titled “Study on Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Marine Ecosystem and Fishery Resources through Ecopath with Ecosim Model.”
After her Ph.D. study, Zeyu extended her study on numerical ecological analysis in her postdoctoral research at SYSU. She studied the dynamics of the demersal fish community and responses to disturbances in the coastal ecosystem in China. Meanwhile, she also joined a team at UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries to analyze the economic, social and environmental effects of harmful fisheries at the ecosystem level, in a project supported by the World Bank.
For her postdoctoral research at the IOF, Zeyu will study the effect of climate change on global marine social-ecological systems. The coupled human-natural marine systems in different regions are expected to respond to climate change differently because of the differences in social, economic and ecological context historically and now. Using ecosystem modelling tools, she will identify possible social, economic and ecological targets for fisheries management and conservation, assess the risk and projected impacts of climate change for fisheries to achieve these targets, and potential adaptation options to these risks and impacts.
