Sahir Advani – Kanaya

Kanaya near an indigenous Nicobari settlement on Kamorta Island, India. Nicobari Indigenous fisheries management systems close areas of the reef to fishing for parts of the year and denote the closed off area with structures like the Kanaya. Lessons learnt from Indigenous fishing customs and practices can inform modern fisheries management by providing examples of how communities can co-exist with marine resources for long periods of time.
