  Coastal bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) spyhopping in estuarine waters of the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador). There it is used as the ‘The Canary in the Coal Mine’ to assess chemical pollution and understand the status of the ecosystem health.

  Colour variation in the #dogwhelk, Nucella lamellosa, on Calvert Island, BC. Nucella are important predators on rocky shores, and are a sentinel species for marine pollution. Their populations are  recovering in Vancouver and other urban centres following restrictions on the use of tributyl tin as an antifouling paint on boat hulls.

  Cask shell (Tonna tankervillii) washed up on Pakiri Beach, New Zealand. These thin-shelled snails live offshore on soft bottoms and can grow up to 25 cm in length. They occasionally wash in to shore during storms, as this broken shell has.
