Biography
I have completed my MSc at the University of British Columbia in the Institute for Oceans and Fisheries. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology from the College of the Atlantic (Maine, USA). I was born in Mauritius and grew up in both India and Mauritius. I have carried out research in multiple locations such as Mauritius, Seychelles, Florida, California, New Zealand, and Maine. My previous work has focused on the conservation of marine mammals, coral reef restoration, and marine education. Throughout these experiences, I kept thinking about the relationship between humans and the ocean. Specially, I was interested on how our current fisheries practices affects the livelihoods of fishers. This lingering question steered me towards the research conducted by Dr Amanda Vincent.
My thesis focused on the bottom trawling industry in Asia. Bottom trawling is one of the most destructive forms of fishing, effectively clear-cutting the ocean. I am keen to understand the fisher’s relationship to the industry, by exploring their affinity, history and cultural association. While aiming to understand the above, I will also be delving into our subconscious assumptions when creating fisheries-related policies. We are trained to think of fishers as a sacred group or “Once a fisher, always a fisher”; however, this may not be the case in the bottom trawling industry. As part of this thesis, I am keen to understand how we bridge the gap between actionable science and policy implementation.
At UBC, I am also involved with the Ocean Leaders Program, the CUPE 2278, and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I aim to not only promote change via my research but also my day to day actions.

- COSMOS International Graduate Travel Award: A travel award that has been endowed by Dr Daniel Pauly and The University of British Columbia for a deserving international graduate student who needs support for research or fieldwork to be conducted in their region or country of origin.
