HERRING PEOPLE: An Arts-Based Initiative

On Sunday, April 2, 2017, IOF presented this public event, which aimed to raise awareness of Pacific herring’s role in BC marine ecosystems, aboriginal communities, and commercial fisheries.

Held in the iconic Bill Reid Gallery, Herring People included a welcome greeting from Hereditary Chief and master carver James Hart, who spoke about reconciliation in the context of the Reconciliation Pole, raised at UBC ON April 1, 2017. Haida artist April White officially launched her “Herring People” serigraph series, and Dr. Mimi E Lam, presented “What values are at stake in the management of herring in BC?”
